International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century worldwide, but it took a while for the United States to catch on. Still, its significance goes way beyond just one day. Let me share a story that really hits home for me.

For thirty years, my family found comfort and community in our local church. It wasn’t just a place to pray; it was where we marked life’s big moments and came together for special occasions. Our pastor, who guided us for two decades, had a unique way of celebrating Mother’s Day that really stuck with me.

He believed in honoring the worth of every woman, whether or not she had kids. On Mother’s Day, he’d invite all the ladies in the church to stand up. Then he’d ask everyone else—men, kids, everyone—to give them a big round of applause. It was such a simple gesture, but it spoke volumes about the value he saw in all women.

Thinking back on this, I can’t help but think of all the amazing women who have shaped my life. But this Mother’s Day will be different—it’s my second without my mom. It’s tough, but remembering our shared memories brings both tears and smiles. I’m lucky we had no regrets, but I know not everyone is so fortunate.

Mother’s Day can be a tough time for many people. So, let’s remember that this weekend isn’t just about flowers and brunch. It’s about honoring the complexities of womanhood—the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Take a moment to reach out to someone who has made a difference in your life, whether they’re a mom, a mentor, or just a really good friend.

To all the incredible women out there who have touched my life and the lives of so many others, thank you. Your strength and resilience inspire us all.

let’s keep celebrating women not just on Mother’s Day, but every single day.
